At Applaud, we know that people speak many different languages worldwide. Translating languages might seem easy, but getting the meaning right is essential. That's where AI comes in, which uses a unique NMT (Neural Machine Translation) method to understand whole sentences or phrases instead of just translating word by word. This helps to give you more accurate translations that convey your message, regardless of language.
The NMT model uses the ISO-639-1 recognized language list standard. Spanish, French, and Portuguese dialects have yet to be officially recognized, even though significant progress continues to be made for locales such as es-419 (Latin American Spanish), which transcend national political boundaries.
The NMT is programmed to translate with an international "Standard." Much like "standard" English, it's a somewhat artificial yet also authentic, grammatically standardized, formal form that uses the most general, widely known, and formal terms and words for things and avoids regional synonyms as much as possible, so it is entirely understandable for any Spanish, French or Portuguese speaker. It's much like English speakers from different countries would all communicate in a standardized form of English as much as possible, with the most basic or formal dictionary words, terms for things that they otherwise would use regional words for in their everyday life, so everyone would completely understand. It's a form of Spanish, French, or Portuguese devoid of regionalisms, just like Google's English translator would give a non-English speaker.
Even though some languages have different versions in different regions, using standardized versions is essential. This helps ensure that everyone can understand each other, no matter where they're from. That's why we follow standards, to give you the best possible service and help you connect with people worldwide.
Including a particular dialect requires you to maintain dedicated linguistic resources, dialect-specific training data, and ongoing maintenance to ensure accurate and high-quality translations. Specific dialects or languages can change over time based on user demand.
While the NMT model may not cover every specific dialect or regional variation, it provides translations for a wide range of languages. It permits our multiple existing customers to work collaboratively with near real-time translation in the Applaud platform in their own languages without lengthy, costly, time-consuming specific translation services. It does this across desktops, mobile devices, and on native apps.
