You can use the Highlight feature to add emphasis to list items by applying a color property. This helps HR teams visually distinguish categories such as employee status, onboarding progress, or task types. See our knowledge base article, Configure the Highlight feature.
Layout options for highlights
| Layout | Description |
|---|---|
| Grid with avatars | Displays employee cards with avatars and a color strip for highlights. Hovering shows a tooltip. For example, highlight onboarding stage (e.g., Preboarder, New Hire). |
| Grid with images | Shows larger profile images instead of avatars, with highlights still visible. For example, emphasize employment type (e.g., Contractor vs Permanent). |
| Timeline | Displays list items in chronological order with highlight colors on the timeline. For example, Show employee lifecycle milestones (e.g., Hire date, Promotion, Training). |
| Row | Simple vertical list format with highlights applied on the left-hand side. For example, mark task urgency (e.g., Overdue vs Upcoming). |
| Mini Grid | Compact layout with small circular highlights around avatars. For example, Quickly identify employee groups (e.g., Leadership team, New starters). |
Best practices for highlights
- Use consistent color coding to represent the same meaning across layouts, for example, red for urgent, green for complete.
- Keep color usage limited and purposeful to avoid overwhelming the user.
- Combine highlights with tooltips to provide context, such as "Preboarder" or "Probation period."
